Nick is in Vignier. Vignier is two hours from Port-au-Prince. Vignier is small with many small houses. Nick’s dad lived in Vignier. He came to the United States with his mom and went to school when he was sixteen. Nick sees that Vignier is grey. The houses are grey. The roof and the floors are grey. The ground is grey. The houses are cement. The small houses do not have cracks in Vigneir. The big houses, the schools, and the churches have a lot of damage.
Nick walks and sees the school. Nick remembers the school in the photos. The school was big and had eighteen rooms. The school is small now. The school is damaged. Nick is sad when he sees the school, but his family is happy. Nick sees grey and cracks and damage. Nick doesn’t understand. Nick remembers that one hundred trucks came to take the damaged grey cement from the school.
“Nick, come with me,” says Aunt Michaelle.
Nick goes into the house with his aunt. Nick sees a girl. She is sixteen. The girl is working in the kitchen. Nick remembers the girl. She came to his house for Christmas. She is Nick’s cousin, Daisy. Daisy is very happy. Daisy hugs Nick. Daisy says that dinner is almost ready. Nick is hungry!
