Nick is a boy. Nick is sixteen years old. Nick lives in Florida. He lives with his dad and his mom. Nick’s mom is from Chile. Nick’s dad is from Haiti. Nick has two dogs. The dogs are fast. The dogs’ names are Peter and Paula. Paula is a girl dog.


Nick likes Christmas. He sees his family at Christmas. Nick’s family visits Florida. His grandma is from Chile and his uncle is from Haiti. Nick likes his grandma. His grandma speaks Spanish. Nick likes to speak Spanish with his grandma. Nick’s uncle speaks French. Nick´s Uncle Benite is funny. He brings presents. Nick likes the presents that Uncle Benite brings. Nick´s uncle speaks English with Nick.


Nick doesn’t like to speak French. Nick is in French class in school. Nick thinks French is difficult. Nick’s dad wants Nick to speak French because his family speaks French. Nick like’s Spanish and English.


After Christmas, Nick’s uncle and his grandma go home. Nick’s uncle goes to Haiti and Nick’s grandma goes to Chile. One day, Nick has his dad’s telephone. Nick is at the store. Nick hears the telephone. Nick sees a text from his uncle. Nick’s uncle is sad. Nick’s uncle is very, very sad.

Nick likes basketball. Nick wants to go to basketball practice, but the text is very sad. Nick runs to his house. Nick’s dad is outside. Nick’s dad sees the news on his iPad. Nick’s dad hears that there is an earthquake in Haiti. Nick and his dad are sad.


Uncle Benite is in Haiti. Uncle Benite has a school. He has a school for boys and girls. Uncle Benite helps boys and girls. The boys and girls speak French and Haitian Creole. Benite’s family lives outside of Port-au-Prince. Benite has a house for his family and a school for the boys and girls. There are six hundred boys and girls in the school. The earthquake is horrible.


Nick doesn’t go to basketball. Nick doesn’t go to school. Nick doesn’t go to the store. Nick wants to hear from his uncle. There are no texts. The phone doesn’t ring. Nick and his Mom and dad are sad.


After one week, the phone rings. It is Benite. Benite is safe. The family is safe. The boys and girls are safe. The school is horrible. The school is not safe. The school had eighteen rooms. The school has six rooms now. The school has no electricity. The school needs electricity.


Nick’s dad works. Nick’s dad has a company. The company works with solar energy. Nick’s Dad can help.


One day Nick’s dad says, “Nick, I will help Benite. I will go to Haiti. Do you want to go to Haiti with me? We can help Benite. I will give Benite solar energy. When Benite has solar energy he can use his computer and he can work on the school. I will go to Haiti for one week. You will miss school and basketball. Do you want to go?”


Nick likes basketball and wants to go to school, but Nick wants to help his uncle. Nick doesn’t like to speak French, but his uncle needs help. Nick will go with his dad.

Nick and his dad see the airport and the houses. Nick sees the mountains. The plane goes to the airport. It is March. The earthquake damaged the airport. The airport works now. The airport is small. Nick and his dad walk from the plane to the airport. The airport has cracks. The cracks are from the earthquake. The cracks are big.


Nick sees men with guns. The men work for the United Nations. The men have blue hats. Nick and his dad walk to the airport from the plane. It is very hot. The airport is hot and there are a lot of people in the airport. Nick and his dad need their passports. Nick and his dad need their bags. It is not fast in the airport.


Nick is hungry. He needs his bag. Nick’s bag is red. His dad sees a red bag. Nick’s dad brings the bag. Nick has a Snickers in the bag. Nick eats the Snickers.


Nick and his dad have their bags. They walk outside the airport. There are a lot of men outside the airport. The men want to help with the bags. The men want work. The men have families. They need a lot because of the earthquake.


Nick sees Benite. Benite is happy. Benite is happy to see Nick and his dad. Benite asks for Nick’s bag and puts the bag on a bus. The bus is a tap-tap. A tap-tap is a haitian bus. It is a truck with two benches. The tap-tap has a lot of colors. The tap-tap is red and blue and green. The tap-tap says Mesi Jezi. Mesi Jezi is “thank you Jesus” in Haitian Creole. The men and women in Haiti speak Haitian Creole. The president and the government speak French and Haitian Creole. Some men and women that have an education speak French and Haitian Creole.

Nick, Benite and Nick’s dad go on the tap-tap with their bags. There are a lot of people in the bus. There are men on the benches. There are women on the benches. There are men on the roof and on the floor. The tap-tap is hot and is not fast. The tap-tap goes for two hours.


Nick sees many (a lot of) tents. The families live in the tents because of the earthquake. There are many (a lot of) trucks with the name United Nations. The UN is helping people in Haiti. The men and women of the UN are working in Haiti. They are helping the people and the damaged houses and schools in Port-au-Prince. Benite doesn’t live in Port-au-Prince. The UN is not helping Benite’s school.


Nick is in the bus for two hours. Nick thinks about basketball and ice cream. Nick thinks about his friends and his school. Nick is hot and hears a lot of French. He hears a lot of Haitian Creole. He understands some French. Nick says, “Bonjour*” to a man. The man says, “Bon swa.**” The man is happy. Nick thinks the man is very happy.

Nick sees many houses with cracks... big cracks. Nick sees many damaged houses and schools and stores. Haiti is damaged, but the man is happy. Nick doesn’t understand.


After two hours, Nick sees his uncle’s house. Nick remembers the house. There are photos of the house and school in Florida. Nick is happy to visit. He will see his aunt and his cousin, Daisy. Nick sees that the house has many cracks. Nick remembers that his aunt and uncle do not sleep in the house now. They sleep in the church. The church has cracks, but the church doesn’t have many cracks.


Nick sees his Aunt Michaelle. She is happy to see Nick. She is very happy. The tap-tap stops and Nick gets his bag. Nick walks to his aunt and hugs her.

Nick is in Vignier. Vignier is two hours from Port-au-Prince. Vignier is small with many small houses. Nick’s dad lived in Vignier. He came to the United States with his mom and went to school when he was sixteen. Nick sees that Vignier is grey. The houses are grey. The roof and the floors are grey. The ground is grey. The houses are cement. The small houses do not have cracks in Vigneir. The big houses, the schools, and the churches have a lot of damage.

Nick walks and sees the school. Nick remembers the school in the photos. The school was big and had eighteen rooms. The school is small now. The school is damaged. Nick is sad when he sees the school, but his family is happy. Nick sees grey and cracks and damage. Nick doesn’t understand. Nick remembers that one hundred trucks came to take the damaged grey cement from the school.

“Nick, come with me,” says Aunt Michaelle.

Nick goes into the house with his aunt. Nick sees a girl. She is sixteen. The girl is working in the kitchen. Nick remembers the girl. She came to his house for Christmas. She is Nick’s cousin, Daisy. Daisy is very happy. Daisy hugs Nick. Daisy says that dinner is almost ready. Nick is hungry!

Dinner is very good. Nick likes dinner in Haiti. After dinner, Daisy and Nick look at the school. Daisy and Nick go in the rooms. The rooms are grey. They have benches. There are no lights or books. Nick remembers his school in Florida.


Lespwa fè viv” says Daisy in Haitian Creole.


“What is ‘Lespwa fè viv”’?” asks Nick.


“It is a proverb in Haiti. It says that hope gives life.”
